Animation is a powerful medium to explore abstract concepts

Animation is a unique art form that has been used for decades to explore and portray philosophical themes, questioning the world we live in and the assumptions we live by.

Today, society as we know it is changing fast due to technological developments. As many of these changes are not visible in physical form, animation is the perfect genre to explore the questions which arise in relation to these changes. It allows us to put an image to them and create an accessible medium to explore unknown futures, convey important themes, and give language to an audience who are living in this changing world.

In the Nordics, the endless possibilities of animation have long been underused and underexplored. We’re passionate about increasing Nordic representation in animation, as it offers countless opportunities to explore our feelings about the rapidly changing world around us.

The Floating World is partially set in Copenhagen, chosen to bring the animation into a familiar setting for Scandinavians. Our Nordic twist on animation creates a new style, as we combine the classical 2D animation with Nordic noir and drama, pushing the boundaries of animation to produce something artistically unique.

Tech and AI are creating a future of uncertainties

Already in our lifetimes, the development of technology and AI has changed how we exist as a society. We are living in new ways and having to learn how our very human existence adapts and changes to work with the technologies around us.

Technology is intended to advance society, and yet our adoption of technologies happens at the pace of the development, without time given for questioning how this may impact our everyday lives, and the essence of our humanity - our civilisations, our families and our love.

AI offers incredible potential and has improved many areas of our life, but many are sceptical - and even afraid. As AI and tech become evermore dominant in our lives, it’s our responsibility to consider what our future will look like: can we trust that technological developments will continue to benefit us? How can we ensure we utilise systems for hope, not for harm? And are we really ready to face the consequences and disruption that dependency on technology brings to our lives?

We see these themes as necessary for exploration and thought, in order that we can be best prepared for what lies ahead. By presenting a new style of animation, we create a new framework for communicating these themes in a lively and engaging manner through entertainment media.

The Floating World is intended to be a starting point for these discussions, and a place for us to consider what the future of humanity means for us individually.

A consideration of possible future societies

Since the beginning of time, technological innovations have caused new civilisations to rise and the old ones to fall - and this will continue to happen.

The idea for The Floating World began five years ago, born by curious thinkers reflecting on how true freedom and opt-in philosophies may help shape the future, and considering how a radical overhaul and total tabula rasa of society could pave the way to build innovative future societies.

Tech-based societies of the future are already being built, both visibly and invisibly. Many are based on ideologies promoting freedom from government control and a new way for humans to thrive. The Floating World uses seasteading to explore this, where self-governed autonomous floating communities exist away from the regulations and media that shape life today. While socio-economic collapse inches closer, innovative societies provide a way in which new civilisations can rise.

A new future may await, but it’s filled with unknowns. How would the societies of today integrate to a society of the future? What new dangers could arise in these supposedly safe havens? And will we still be able to protect our loved ones and hold our personal values close?

New civilisations rise - and old ones fall

Since the beginning of time, technological developments have caused human civilisations to rise and fall - and AI development is no different. The idea for The Floating World began four years ago, and even since then, we have seen a rapid pace of change - and an impact on human societies. As technology becomes more and more advanced, societies are changing as a result - often without us even being aware.
And how can we consider our responses when we are not aware?

Alongside changing the societies we know, technological developments are also responsible for the creation of new societies. Combined with the hindsight of historical knowledge and awareness of the past, we are able to create new societies based on knowledge and development. One example of this is seasteading, which offers the possibility of political autonomy in floating societies. As the likelihood of socio-economic collapse becomes greater every day, seasteading offers the opportunity for new civilisations to rise. Despite their ideological potential, they carry many unknowns -  will they fall victim to the difficulties that have faced societies since the beginning of time? And how can they provide a safe haven that still allows our humanity and protects our loved ones? If civilisation as we know it crumbles and the technological future is left, will we be ready?
